Checkpoint on the progress of the Smart Trash Bin Project
Topics Discussed:
1. Object Recognition (Artificial Intelligence):
- We prepared a Google Colab with the codes for training the AI. We are still in the training process, but the results are promising—the AI can already identify objects.
- Since the dataset is not yet complete, we do not have performance tests for the Raspberry Pi application.
- The model used is YOLO v8, which specializes in object detection.
2. Separation Mechanism:
- We explored Trashbot and Bin-E, existing waste separation projects.
- Ideas obtained from research:
- Metal or wooden box
- Large box above the claw
- Rotating axis
- Fixed divider
- Actuator
- Control system
- Conveyor belt

3. Volume Monitoring:
- Use of an ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04), positioned at the top of the trash bin.
- This sensor will be placed at the top of the bin and will measure the distance between the bottom of the bin and itself. If this distance is less than or equal to a predefined minimum distance, a communication signal will be triggered.
- There is a possibility of using multiple sensors, and instead of relying on a single distance measurement, we could use the average of the distances calculated by all sensors.
- Additionally, we plan to add a delay period during which the “full bin” condition must be maintained before triggering a notification. This will help reduce false alarms.
- The information will need to be transmitted via Wi-Fi using an ESP32 or ESP8266 module.
- The data transmission can be done through:
- Email → Using a service like IFTTT or SMTP
- WhatsApp or Telegram messages → Using bots
